Best Time to Visit Arizona Route 66

Arizona's 401 miles of Route 66 cross some of the most dramatic landscape on the entire Mother Road — from the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest to the Kaibab Plateau near the Grand Canyon, and through the stunning red rock country around Flagstaff and Seligman. Arizona's extreme elevation changes (from 500 feet at the Colorado River to 7,000 feet at Flagstaff) mean weather varies wildly along the route.

1Spring (March–May) — Best Overall

Spring is the ideal season for Arizona Route 66. The low desert near Kingman and Oatman warms to 75–85°F while Flagstaff stays pleasantly cool at 55–65°F. The desert wildflowers bloom spectacularly in April after wet winters — the hillsides near Oatman and Goldroad can turn solid gold with poppies. All attractions are open, crowds are moderate, and hotel prices haven't hit summer peaks. The Route 66 Fun Run from Seligman to Topock (first weekend in May) is the biggest car event on Arizona Route 66.

2Summer (June–August) — Split Decision

Summer in Arizona is a tale of two climates. The low desert from Kingman to the Colorado River is brutally hot — 105–115°F, making outdoor stops like Oatman's burro feeding genuinely dangerous. However, Flagstaff at 7,000 feet stays comfortable at 75–85°F and is a summer escape for Phoenicians. Winslow, Holbrook, and the Petrified Forest are hot (95–100°F) but tolerable with early morning starts. Monsoon thunderstorms bring dramatic afternoon skies in July and August.

3Fall (September–November) — Peak Season

Fall is spectacular on Arizona Route 66. The aspen trees around Flagstaff turn brilliant gold in early October, the desert cools to comfortable 80–90°F, and the summer monsoons create the clearest skies of the year. The Route 66 Days festival in Kingman (September) and Flagstaff's Centennial celebrations draw Route 66 enthusiasts. October is the single best month — every elevation zone is comfortable, and the light is perfect for photography at the Painted Desert and Meteor Crater.

4Winter (December–February) — Mild Desert, Cold Mountains

The low desert around Kingman (50–65°F) and Oatman is pleasant for winter driving. But Flagstaff averages 100 inches of snow per year — the route through Flagstaff, Williams, and Ash Fork can be icy and snow-packed. Winslow and Holbrook are cold (30–50°F) but usually clear. Flagstaff is a ski town in winter (Arizona Snowbowl), which gives Route 66 a completely different vibe. Many roadside attractions in Seligman and along the remote stretches have reduced winter hours.

October is the single best month — golden aspens in Flagstaff, comfortable desert temps, and crystal-clear skies.

Never visit Oatman or Kingman in July or August — 115°F heat is genuinely life-threatening without preparation.

The Route 66 Fun Run (Seligman to Topock, first May weekend) is the premier car cruise event in Arizona.

Pack for two climates — Flagstaff can be 40 degrees cooler than Kingman on the same day.
