California Road Conditions

California's Route 66 corridor crosses some of the most varied terrain on the entire Mother Road — from blistering desert to mountain passes to LA freeway sprawl. Here's what every driver needs to know.

1The Mojave Desert Section (Needles to Barstow)

The National Trails Highway follows the original Route 66 alignment through the Mojave. Road surface varies from good pavement to rough patches. Some sections are single-lane with no shoulder. Watch for sand drifts, loose gravel, and the occasional desert tortoise crossing. No services for long stretches — carry extra water and fuel.

2The Mountain & Valley Section (Barstow to San Bernardino)

I-15 through Cajon Pass can be steep and winding. The original Route 66 alignment through Victorville and Rancho Cucamonga is well-maintained surface streets. Watch for truck traffic on I-15 and occasional high desert winds that can push smaller vehicles.

3The LA Section (San Bernardino to Santa Monica)

Route 66 through LA follows surface streets — Foothill Boulevard, Colorado Boulevard, Santa Monica Boulevard. These are regular city streets with traffic lights, congestion, and LA's legendary traffic. Avoid weekday rush hours (7-9 AM, 4-7 PM) or budget 2-3x the normal drive time. Weekend mornings are best.

4Cell Service & Navigation

Excellent in all cities. Spotty to nonexistent in the Mojave Desert between Needles and Barstow. Download offline maps before entering the desert. GPS works fine throughout — but sometimes routes you to the freeway instead of the historic alignment. Use the EZ66 Guide or a Route 66 navigation app for authentic routing.

lightbulbPro Tips

The Mojave section is best driven early morning — cooler temps, better light for photos, less heat shimmer.

LA traffic is real — Google Maps live traffic is essential for timing your drive through the city.

Cajon Pass on I-15 can have high winds — check weather before driving if you have a high-profile vehicle.

The EZ66 Guide book is the gold standard for staying on the original alignment through California.
