Springfield hosts the official Route 66 birthday celebration marking 100 years since Cyrus Avery proposed the name in this very city. The three-day event features classic car shows with over 200 vintage vehicles, live music on three stages, guided walking tours of original Route 66 landmarks, a vintage car parade down historic Route 66, and a special ceremony at the Route 66 birthplace marker on Park Central Square. Food vendors line the square with BBQ, funnel cakes, and craft beer.

The historic Wagon Wheel Motel hosts a special open house.

Carthage 66 Drive-In Centennial Night

Celebrate Independence Day and Route 66's 100th birthday at one of the last original drive-in theatres on the Mother Road. Operating since 1949, the 66 Drive-In hosts this special centennial screening with classic Route 66 films. Vintage cars line the lot, a live rockabilly band performs before showtime, concessions serve drive-in classics, and the night ends with a spectacular fireworks display at midnight. Gates open 7:30 PM, movies at dusk.

Saturday's headliner performs at sunset with the Gateway Arch as backdrop.

Route 66 Centennial Gala — Gateway Arch

THE marquee event of the entire Route 66 Centennial — held on the exact date Route 66 was certified in 1926. The day begins with a sunrise ceremony at the Chain of Rocks Bridge. A centennial motorcade of classic cars drives the original alignment to the Gateway Arch. Daytime festivities include Route 66 historians, authors, and preservationists. The evening features a formal gala with live music and fireworks over the Mississippi River. Special Arch tram rides include Centennial commentary.
