Cinco De Mayo, or the 5th of May, is a holiday celebrated by millions of people throughout the United States and Mexico. The holiday commemorates the 1862 Battle of Puebla, in which a Mexican army conquered the invading French forces of Napoleon III.
Not to be confused with Mexico’s Independence Day – September 16 – Cinco De Mayo is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. So, where will you be marking the occasion? Below are our some of our favorite cities to celebrate Cinco De Mayo!
Portland might not be the first place that comes to mind for Cinco De Mayo, but the city sure knows how to throw a party. Portland’s 30th Annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta will take place all weekend long in Portland’s Waterfront Park. The three-day event will feature a carnival, ballet & mariachi, a laser light show and a FREE Children’s Area with games and crafts.
The 27th Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival 2014 in Denver, Colorado is sure to be an entertaining event. The festival lineup includes traditional Latin music and fare, a taco eating contest and even a Zumba Fitness Class. Attendees also enjoy the chile cook-off and the annual Chihuahua races.
Each year, thousands come out to celebrate Cinco De Mayo in Chicago. If you’re in the area this year, why not check out “Festival Cinco De Mayo” in Little Village? The celebration is sure to be a popular one, as its entertainment lineup includes the likes of Eddy Venezuela and Radio Disney. Several mariachi bands will also be taking the stage during the event.
Because Cinco De Mayo falls on a Monday this year, many places are choosing to celebrate the occasion on the weekend before the holiday. San Francisco, for example, is hosting its “SF Cinco De Mayo Festival” on Saturday, May 3rd, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Enjoy an eclectic lineup of Mexican performers, folk dancers, singers and Mariachi bands.
This year’s Brickell Festival theme is “Cinco at The Jungle” and by all accounts, the festival will no doubt live up to its name. Taking place at Miami’s Jungle Island, the event will feature live animal shows, wildlife encounters for the kids and food trucks from all across the state.
