When most people hear “Washington state”, they generally think about cold, rainy weather, coffee, and grunge music. However, what many people don’t realize is that Washington is actually home to some beautiful beaches. It may not always be the tropical day with your feet in the water and sand, but for those seeking a day away from the hustle and bustle of Seattle, a day at the beach is always a great idea.
La Push, Second Beach, Olympic National Park
Second Beach may not be as large as other national parks, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in natural beauty. Although the trails make up less than a mile of hiking, they will take you through the gorgeous Pacific Northwest forest until you reach Second Beach. There, you’ll be able to take in the views of tide pools, stacks, and even the Natural Arch. And while you may only see seabirds, the area is known to be a natural habitat for sea lions, sea otters, and seals.
Alki Beach, Seattle, Washington
West of the big city you’ll find Alki Beach. And if you find yourself California Dreamin’, this beach is reminiscent of So-Cal. In addition to the scenic “traditional”-looking beach, you’ll have access to a walkway that stretches two and a half miles where locals will be roller blading, biking, and skating. In fact, on a hot summer day, you may even think you’re in California as you watch beach volleyball, people tanning on blankets, and kayakers in the water.
Point No Point, Kitsap Peninsula, Washington
If you love fishing, Point No Point is your Washington beach. And while it may take you about two hours to get to from Seattle, Point No Point is a hub for salmon. Although the water is cold here (perfect for salmon), you can just as easily fish from the shore. Even if fishing isn’t your thing, Point No Point makes for a great day out. You’ll find a sandy beach for a cold day in the sun at the top point of Kitsap Peninsula, and a lighthouse overlooking the area. Just be sure to check the weather before embarking on this day adventure; the Strait is known for strong winds and fast-moving rains.
Sooes Beach, Makah Beach, Washington
If your idea of a relaxing day at the beach involves leaving everything behind and enjoying some isolation, then Sooes Beach is for you. This peaceful beach is filled with tide pools, starfish, and uninhibited sunset views. You’ll also find plenty of birds and sea lions about, as well as ample opportunity for hunting for seashells. Some find Sooes Beach a little too isolated, with no real amenities around, but for those looking for a peaceful day out, you won’t find a better place to be.
Long beach, Washington
Long Beach is a beach town reminiscent of old timey east coast beach communities. This idyllic town is home to, you guessed it, a long beach, said to be the longest in the world. Founded in 1881, this quaint town is home to a boardwalk spanning about two miles offering ocean views and strolls through beach dunes. You can either take a step back in time with the antique shops or enjoy the ocean breeze.
Even in the Pacific Northwest, a day at the beach is closer than you would think. Whether you wish to spend the day fishing, enjoying the sand between your toes, looking for sea otters, or strolling through a beachside village, Washington state has more beach day trips than you would think.
