You may know it as the home of the Kentucky Derby, but there’s so much more to Louisville, Kentucky than fascinators and mint juleps. This southern locale oozes charm, character, and classic hospitality. Even if you only have a day or two to spare, it pays to take your time getting to know all that it has to offer.
Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory
Fans of America’s favorite pastime head to this institution that celebrates not only the game but the most famous bat in the sport. Marvel at the world’s largest one, a steel replica of Babe Ruth’s Louisville Slugger, and take a look at the famous faces and names on the signature wall. Take a peek behind the scenes with a factory tour, and when you’re sufficiently inspired, go “pro” at Bud’s Batting Cage.
Old Louisville
Even if you’re not a history and architecture buff, you’ll probably adore the quaint and houses and cafes of Old Louisville, an area which is home to the largest concentration of Victorian mansions in the whole country. Take a stroll through Central Park, or learn more about the neighborhood with a guided walking tour that’s sure to provide plenty of Instagram-worthy photo-ops.
Kentucky Derby Museum
While you’re here, you might as well! Dig into the history of “the most exciting two minutes in sports” with exhibits, the world’s largest horseshoe, and even a stable with a resident miniature and thoroughbred horse at this museum on the grounds of Churchill Downs. Big, crazy hat optional.
Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co.
The whole region is known for its bourbon, so you can’t go wrong with a visit to any of the distilleries. However, Kentucky Peerless has been making the beloved brown liquor since 1907 and established itself as a local favorite. The distillery is open for tours Wednesday through Saturday — no reservations required, and samples included, of course!
Fourth Street Live!
Every city needs a bustling center. Fourth Street Live! is an entertainment and dining destination that features a variety of restaurants, bars, and events. The Goose Island Beer Bridge serves up craft and draft brews with a view, while PBR Louisville has a country flair to spare with a mechanical bull and plenty of sleek indoor and outdoor space to chill out. It’s also walking distance to the Waterfront Park and many downtown Louisville hotels, making it a great place for both visitors and locals to meet and mingle.
