There are few places better suited to a road trip than California. The state has everything from mountains to ocean, sky scrapers in LA to giant Sequoias, lush vegetation to miles of desert. But, one of the best features of all the amazing regions of California has to be the central coastal wine region.
While most people are headed out to Napa Valley, the savvy road tripper (that’s you) knows all about the various wine trails that dot the incredible coastline of California.
You can easily slowly make your way down the California coast on the Ventura County Wine Trail or stop off in a spot like Paso Robles and visit a number of the area vineyards.
Let’s take a look at what the central coast of California has to offer any wine lover.
Ventura County Wine Trail
If you’re looking for a place to start on your wine road trip, you can’t really go wrong hitting the Ventura County Wine Trail first. Who doesn’t love a wine trail? This one is sure to deliver!
Conveniently located along the famous Route 101, this wine trail features fifteen separate wineries from you to choose from. Many offer both tastings and tours, and on the weekends especially you can enjoy the local farmer’s markets in and around Ventura County.
Some of the favorite wineries to visit include Four Brix Winery, Cantara Cellars, and Plan B Wine Cellars.
Paso Robles
Among the locals, Paso Robles is fondly looked at as what Napa Valley was like before it became overrun and the mob scene it is today. So, for those who are looking for a much more laid back, but no less delicious, way of life, this is the place for you.
Found at the intersection of route 101 and 46, this inland gem has a number of wineries to tick off the bucket list. Some local favorites to visit include Villa Creek, Tablas Creek and Steinbeck Vineyards.
San Luis Obispo
With over 250 vineyards in San Luis Obispo County, it’s pretty safe to say they are into wine. Since it is able to pull in the cool marine air into the mountains, this area offers a unique wine experience not offered throughout the rest of California.
In the southern part of the county, the area known as the Edna Valley tracks down to the sea and has some delicious vineyards. For some of your favorite refreshing whites, be sure to visit local wineries like Kelsey See Canyon Vineyards, Tolosa Winery, and Tangent Winery.
With all of the options available on the Central California Wine Coast, you truly cannot go wrong when setting out on any road trip. Enjoy a more structured trail, or just wander the hillsides and see where things end up, you won’t regret it either way.
