America is full of small towns that get overlooked due to the fact that they are small or not considered major cities. However, there are a so many that offer unique sites and rich culture. ¬†Located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a town that is home to many hidden gems that most people never knew. It is the quaint and historic town of Houghton, Michigan. Houghton was named after Douglass Houghton who was Michigan’s first appointed state geologist.

Places To Go & Things To See

When you’re in Houghton, you’ll be amazed by all of the turn-of-the-century buildings created with¬†Jacobsville sandstone you’ll see this as your driving down Main Street. In addition, a fascinating site to see is the¬†Mineral Range Railroad depot in Houghton, built in 1903. Which is now¬†restored and a private business.¬†Another crucial and exciting location to visit is the Court House, the Douglass House and church in the surrounding area.¬†

If you’re on the hunt for a beautiful destination, Riverside Park is the place to go. This waterfront park is located west of the aerial lift bridge. At Riverside Park, you will find a beautiful boardwalk, a scenic picnic area, an amusing playground, a clean beach and a spacious RV Park. Looking for a trail to walk? Check out the Houghton Waterfront Trail. Here, you can bike, jog, walk and even paddleboard through the Keweenaw Water Trail.¬†

Be sure to catch a fairy at the Isle Royale National Park Service Visitors Center just off of US 41. Isle Royale is located 70 miles out on Lake Superior and can be visited by ferry. This is a hot spot for outdoor enthusiasts including, hikers and campers. 

The Great Outdoors

Looking to spend some more time in the great outdoors? Don’t miss out on the opportunity to go bike riding, hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or snowmobiling on the many trails surrounding the area. If you’re into snowmobiling, head over to the¬† Bill Nichols Trail, which goes from Houghton to Mass City and the Jack Stevens Trail runs from Hancock to Calumet. There are¬†some fantastic and beautiful trails around the area to spend some time in the great outdoors.
