They say theme parks are for kids, but in reality, most adults never lose that excitement when setting foot inside the gates.

What’s special about many of the theme parks in the Northeast is that they have a bit of history behind them. While you might think you only want to spend a day in the newest and shiniest parks, there is something to be said for the fun you can have in a park with some tradition.

We wanted to share some of our favorite known, and not so well known, theme parks in the Northeast for endless summer fun.

For the Classic Park Lovers

One of the classic theme parks in the Northeast has to be Luna Park at Coney Island. Though damaged by Hurricane Sandy, the park has been rebuilding itself and has plenty of high action thrill rides ready to go. If you’re headed on a trip to New York City this summer, Luna Park has to be a stop.

For the Roller Coaster Junkies

Hershey Park is another great theme park, and yes, it’s by those same people that brought us the famous (and delicious) Hershey’s Chocolate Bar. With over 20 roller coasters, ranging from the traditional wooden to the new Skyrush, a “mega extreme” option, there is something for everyone.

For the Adrenaline Seekers

For an epic adventure, head to the largest Six Flags Theme Park in the United States, Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey. If you love roller coasters, then this park is the place to be with Nitro, El Toro and Kingda Ka. The park is also home to Hurricane Harbor, so if you need to cool down on a summer scorcher, this is the place to be.

For the Kids

If you’re heading out with young kids this summer, then consider taking a trip to the White Mountains of New Hampshire to visit Story Land. This park, while lacking in some of the adrenaline rushing rides, is geared towards kids, and has a classic fairy tale theme that they will love. If, you do need a ride though, check out the log flume.

For the Summer Camp Memories

Remember spending your days at summer camp as a kid? Well Lake Compounce in Connecticut will bring you right back there the second you enter the gates. Though it might seem nostalgic, this theme park has Boulder Dash the #1 rated wooden coaster in the world, as well as Crocodile Cove water park and even offers camping cabins.

Each of these parks offer something special and are a little bit unique. While it’s fun heading out to the monster theme parks of the world, it can be a lot of fun exploring a few lesser known parks that still offer a fantastic time.
