As we come into the summer months, it’s a good idea for outdoor lovers to plan summer trips. Camping and outdoor activities are great for this time of year. And what better place to start the planning then at one of the greatest state parks in the Midwest?

Located in Michigan’s beautiful upper peninsula is the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Also known as one of the most scenic, beautiful and tranquil state parks in the country. Although unfamiliar to most, those who know what this park consists of can agree on one thing. It’s always worth the trip – whether you live near or far.

Scenic Views

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park stretches across 60,000 acres and is wildly recognized as one of the only large wilderness area remaining in the Midwest. Consisting of sky high timber, beautiful and quiet lakes and miles of wild rivers and streams, any visit to this state park will surely be one you will never forget. Don’t be alarmed if you hear someone calling this area the “Porkies,” this is a common name for the park. If you’re at the right place at the right time, you may even find several black bears walking around.

The Porkies were established in 1945, and even though many things change over time, the Porkies remain in their original state. The Porkies is Michigan’s only state-designated wilderness and is partnered with the Leave No Trace ethics. Are you an outdoors enthusiast? You’ll truly be in your element here. If you appreciate the natural ways of a wilderness area, you’ll love backpacking through the Porkies.
