From the Redwood Forest to Mountain Peaks, Kings Canyon National Park Has it All

California has more than it’s fair share of spectacular National Parks. In fact, many of the most famous, and visited, parks like Death Valley, Joshua Tree and Yosemite are located here. Yet, there are quite a few more beautiful National Parks in California, and Kings Canyon is one of them.

What makes Kings Canyon National Park a great choice to visit is that it’s almost two parks in one. Attached to Sequoia National Park, a visit to one means you can see an incredible amount of natural beauty in just one place. It really makes Kings Canyon a must see!

The area where the park now stands was discovered back in the middle of the 1800s by famous naturalist (and early National Park champion) John Muir. It officially became a park just about 100 years later, and with that, the land was saved from threats of having its great trees chopped down and the area turned into a dam.

One of the biggest attractions to the parks are the giant Sequoias. Known as the largest living things on Earth, they are a must see. There are hiking loop trails to both the General Grant Grove and the Redwood Mountain Grove to see these amazing beauties that are well over 1,000 years old!

For those who are looking for a little less hiking but still want to be able to enjoy the scenery and views, there are a number of drives that go throughout the park. Try the loops of Generals Highway and Highway 180 to get a complete view, and be sure to have your camera ready for photos!

Now, if you’re a real climber, there are a number of spots you want to check out. The bottom part of Kings Canyon is located in the heart of the Sierra Nevada range, so there are a number of peaks that are over 14,000 feet, especially in the Sierra Crest.

There are a number of campgrounds in Kings Canyon, even some that are open all year round. So if you love winter hiking, cross country skiing or being in the park during a quiet time of year, you’ll be set. Keep in mind that all of the campsites are relatively rough, there are no hookups, so you will need to be prepared for that!

Kings Canyon National Park truly offers something for every visitor. Plus, because of it’s unique location and geography, you can experience rolling hills, conifer forests, alpine peaks and giant redwoods all in one place. This is perfect park to visit all year round, and if you really want to learn more, be sure to learn more about their Ranger Led Programs.
