The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is one of the highest regarded bird sanctuaries in the Northeast. Not only that, but it’s also one of the best places in New York City to view a variety of migrating species. The refuge is home to over 330 bird species. If you’re an avian enthusiast, you must visit the refuge. So, where do you start? Begin your journey at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge by heading over to the Visitor Contact Station where guests will obtain complimentary walking permits which are needed to hike the trails. The Visitor Contact Station offers many different exhibits that highlight Jamaica Bay’s extraordinary plant and animal life, history, and the continuing human impact on the nature of the bay.


Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge also consists of an array of native reptiles, amphibians, small mammals, over 60 species of butterflies. Be sure to partake in one of their numerous ranger-led nature hikes, bird watching sessions, and seining activities that allow guests to get up close to these amazing animals and learn about how they are protected.

The park’s one-of-a-kind scenic grounds are home to a wide variety of unique native habitats such as; a salt marsh, upland field and woods, fresh and brackish water ponds, and an open bay. There is also a wide variety of ranger and partner-led activities offered at the refuge all year-round that include but are not limited to; presentations on seasonal wildlife, tours at sunset, hiking, boating, many programs for families and so much more.
