Learn

The William Floyd Estate on the mainland became an official part of the Fire Island National Seashore in 1965. It contains a treasure trove of architectural features and educational artifacts. In fact, two hundred and fifty years of history are preserved at the estate.  William Floyd was born in 1734 at this home and went on to become a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The Floyd family donated these stunning grounds to the National Park Service in 1976 for all to enjoy.

Meditate

Fire Island National Seashore’s barrier island has offered a place of solitude for many years to those used to city life. Meditate among the dunes or comb the sand for rare shells that line its shore. If you are not afraid of heights, then perhaps you might even consider taking the 182 step tour of the Fire Island Lighthouse. A symbol of Fire Island’s rich nautical tradition, the tower’s beacon provides magnificent panoramic views of the ocean that surrounds it.

Experience

As generations of visitors can tell you, Fire Island is a beautiful place to create memories for a lifetime. During the summer months, enjoy time on the water with a park ranger-led canoe tour of the park’s most extensive salt marsh. Alternatively, explore the Fire Island Wilderness Visitor Center year-round by car. Have a furry companion? Today, leashed pets are welcome in many areas on Fire Island.
