The William Floyd EstateĀ on the mainland became an official part of the Fire Island National Seashore in 1965. It contains a treasure troveĀ of architectural features and educational artifacts. In fact, two hundred and fifty years of history are preserved at the estate. Ā William Floyd was born in 1734 at this home and went on to becomeĀ a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The Floyd family donated these stunning grounds to the National Park Service in 1976 for all to enjoy.

Fire Island National Seashore’s barrier island has offered a place of solitude for many years to those used to city life. Meditate among the dunes or comb the sand for rare shells that line its shore. If you are not afraid of heights, then perhaps you might even consider takingĀ the 182 step tour of the Fire Island Lighthouse. A symbol of Fire Island’sĀ rich nautical tradition, theĀ tower’s beaconĀ provides magnificent panoramic views of the ocean that surrounds it.

Traveling to Fire Island National Seashore is a breeze from many locations along Long Island. From May to mid-October, many visitors either drive or take the Long Island Railroad to access passenger ferries that service National Park Service facilities on Fire Island.
