It’s about that time again – back to school! Before we get to the first day of school, we have to make sure our children are prepared, so we go back to school shopping. If you’re like most people, you probably have a budget to keep in mind while you’re splurging on supplies for your child or children. Take a look at some back to school shopping tips before you head to the stores.

See What You Have at Home First

Before you fight the crowds at the stores, write a list of what you need and see what you already have at home. Not only will save you time, it will also help you save money! You never know what you might find in the drawers in closets in your home that your child can use for school!

Separate Wants from Needs.

When it comes to back to school shopping, it can be easy to stray away from the things you need for the things you want (or your child for that matter!) For the most part, typical school supplies will never go out of style. Pencils, crayons, notebooks, folders, etc., are some of the necessities that will always be there. Beware of trends and what your child thinks they need. For example, a backpack with headphones, which is only important to have because “everybody” will have it! If your budget doesn’t allow it, don’t buy it.

Head to the Dollar Store

There’s really no reason to NOT go to the dollar store for necessities! The bargains are usually unparalleled and you can stock up on basic supplies, such as pencils and notebooks for the best prices!

Buy Supplies on Tax-Free Day

Most states have a “no tax” holiday, when all items can be purchase without sales tax. Be sure to purchase clothes, electronics, supplies, and more – all tax-free! Many states will offer their sales tax holiday in the beginning of August before school starts. Be sure to look up your states’ before you go shopping.

Use Coupons

Last, but certainly not least and probably the most important – use coupons! Whether you get them from the Sunday paper, in the mail or email, using coupons will help you save a significant amount of money on school shopping. A good thing to remember is that several stores offer coupon matching, so if a competitor has a better deal, they will match that. Be sure to ask your store of choice before you go!
